Using #Dating

Have you ever found yourself aimlessly swiping through profiles you have nothing in common with? It seems like that happens far too easily these days!

But that’s where #Dating is different: We make every single swipe count by matching local people who share passions. Looking for a #hiking lover to go #camping with? Want a #long-term-relationship with an #easy-going #introvert? We’ve got you covered.

And while we’re connecting you to like-minded people, our focus is on empowering you to be yourself. How? By creating a safe and open space that celebrates diversity and inspires genuine connections through dating.

#Dating is completely free. Our mission is to create the freedom for people to date their own way. Do you think we should charge you for that? Nope, we don’t either.

To start using #Dating, log in to your #Dating profile. Then start swiping to find exciting matches:

  • Swipe right to “like” someone. If they like you back, it’s a match!
  • You’ll be able to start chatting with someone once you have matched with them.
  • Add unique hashtags to your profile to describe yourself.
  • Use the filter icon to select any unique hashtags you are seeking in a partner.
  • Play fun games like Photo Duel to see more people, answer fun questions and see if your profile photos are making a good impression!
  • Match, chat, flirt and have fun online with people who like what you like.

Thousands of amazing people have already joined and are waiting to find someone just like you. You’d better get started!

Our hashtags are designed to help you find better matches:

  • Use hashtags to describe yourself. This shows your matches what you’re interested in and helps you get discovered by others more easily.
  • Hashtags can also be used to filter your search based on the qualities you may be looking for in a match.

Hashtags show your matches what you’re interested in. To add hashtags that describe yourself and appear in your profile:

  1. Go to the Profile page.
  2. Tap on “My hashtags” to see your current hashtags and select or search for new hashtags:

    – You can choose up to 10 hashtags.
  3. When you’re finished, tap the check mark ✓ on the top right corner.

  3. Tap “Select” to the right of “I’m looking for”.

To make your profile visible, you need to have at least one approved photo of yourself. Once you add this, your profile will be visible to others for swiping. For more tips, check out our photo guidelines below.

You can upload up to 10 photos to your profile. You can change or delete these photos anytime by going to the Profile page. Tap on the profile photo you want to edit, and select “Edit”. If you want to remove that photo, select “Delete”.

Note: You can only delete your photo as long as you have at least one other photo. Otherwise, your profile will no longer be visible to other users. To make your profile visible once again, upload a photo of yourself.

If your photo was not accepted by our system, it is most likely because the size of the photo you were trying to upload was too small or too large, or because the photo doesn’t meet our guidelines for #Dating.

Size guidelines
The minimum size for a photo is 320 x 320 pixels. The maximum image file size is 20 MB.

Photo guidelines
We work hard to create a space that allows all our #Daters to be their true selves. Our guidelines help ensure that all users have a safe and enjoyable experience. Your account may be flagged by our system if:

  • You don’t have at least 1 photo of yourself
  • Your photo contains nudity
  • You have a photo of a minor on their own, or a minor depicted in an inappropriate way
  • You show a gun in your photo
  • You have political slogans, statements, or symbols in your photo
  • You have personal contact info in your photo
  • You have watermarks or text overlays in your photo
  • You have content that is abusive or promotes violence or hate crimes

For info about our guidelines, please visit our #Dating Terms of Use.

At the moment, searching by location is not possible. Matches are created based on your device’s GPS location. But you can adjust the range of profiles you want to see:

  1. Go to the Match page.
  2. Tap on the filter icon.
  3. Use the horizontal bar under “Distance (in your country)” to adjust the distance. Making the range smaller allows you to view profiles that are nearby.

You can also have even more fun by turning on international profiles so that you can see even more people:

  1. Go to the Match page.
  2. Tap on the filter icon in the top left corner.
  3. Next to “International profiles”, tap on the slider button to see international profiles. It will then appear green.

To update your age, go to your #Dating profile page, tap on the gear icon, then tap “Account settings”. Tap on the birthday that is currently listed to see the date picker, choose the correct birthday, and press “Set”. The age listed on your #Dating profile will automatically update.

If your location is listed incorrectly, you can manually update it:

  1. Go to the Profile page.
  2. Tap on “My dating location”
  3. This shows you which location your profile is currently using. To update this, press “Refresh location”.

Quick tip: If this doesn’t work, try deleting your browser cache and history. When you refresh the location, you should see the right location. You can also try deleting the app and reinstalling it. Just be sure to give #Dating permission to use your location when prompted.

If that still doesn’t fix it, send a screenshot to our customer support team and let them know:

  • Which location you are in
  • Which location the app is displaying
  • Which browser you are using (e.g. Chrome, Safari, etc.), or if you were using the #Dating app
  • Which device you were using (e.g. tablet, smartphone, etc.)

We can’t manually change your location, but we will do everything we can to help you fix it!

At the moment, you can only unsubscribe from push notifications. To do this:

  1. Go to the Profile page
  2. Tap on the gear icon
  3. Tap on “Account settings”
  4. Under “Messages, matches & more”, tap on the slider button to turn off push notifications. It will then change from green to white

You can deactivate your profile anytime to hide it from others. Your profile will no longer be shown, but you can still chat with your existing matches. You can return to your profile and reactivate it at any time.

To deactivate your profile

  1. Go to the Profile page.
  2. Tap “Profile status” at the bottom of the page.
  3. Under “Deactivate my #Dating profile”, tap on the slider button to deactivate your profile. It will then appear green.

To reactivate your profile

  1. Go to the Profile page.
  2. Tap “Profile status” at the bottom of the page.
  3. Under “Deactivate my #Dating profile”, tap on the slider button to reactivate your profile. It will then change from green to white.

To permanently delete your profile:

  1. Go to the Profile page.
  2. Tap “Profile status” at the bottom of the page.
  3. Tap “Delete profile” at the bottom of the page.
  4. You can choose to deactivate your profile instead, which will hide your profile from others and allow you to come back anytime. To delete your profile, press “Skip” at the bottom.
  5. Choose the reason you want to delete your profile. Then press “Delete profile”.

If you want to temporarily hide your profile instead of deleting it, you can also choose to deactivate your #Dating profile. This will allow you to keep all your existing matches and come back to your profile anytime.

If you aren’t able to upload a picture, it might be because your photo doesn’t meet our size guidelines, a web file saved on your browser needs to be cleared from the cache or because your device is out of storage.

Size guidelines
The minimum size for a photo is 320 x 320 pixels. The maximum image file size is 20 MB.

Browser cache
If you are using #Dating on the web, try clearing your browser cache. Then open a new window and go to #Dating again. Many technical glitches can be solved this way.

Storage
You might need to free up some space on your device so there is enough RAM (Random Access Memory) to handle the photo upload process. You can use a guide like this to clear RAM on your device. After that, you can try uploading a photo again.

If you still have trouble uploading a picture, please send a screenshot of the problem to our customer support team and let them know:

  • Which browser you are using (e.g. Chrome, Safari, etc.), or if you were using the #Dating app
  • Which device you were using (e.g. tablet, smartphone, etc.)

We’ll get the issue fixed as quickly as possible.

Others will only be able to see what you’ve added to your profile, like:

  • Your first name and age
  • Your pictures
  • Your hashtags
  • Your dating location
  • Any details you’ve added to “My info”, if they’ve added the same info in their profile

They won’t be able to see:

  • Your email address
  • Your exact location
  • Who you’ve swiped right or left on
  • Your partner preferences (found under “I’m interested in”)

You can see exactly what others see when you go to the “Edit profile” page and click on “Preview” in the top right corner.

We occasionally show you international profiles so that you can see even more people and have even more fun! If you prefer to stick with profiles in your country, you can deactivate this feature at any time:

  1. Go to the Match page
  2. Tap on the filter icon in the top left corner
  3. Next to “International profiles”, tap on the slider button to stop seeing international profiles. It will then change from green to white

Matching and Chatting

A match is someone you swiped right on, who also swiped right on you, showing that you have similar preferences and interests! Getting a match on #Dating means you can start chatting, sending photos, and finding out if your match is right for you.

When you’re on the Match page and you like what you see, swipe right! You will only be able to see who liked your profile when you have a match. Otherwise, it’ll stay a mystery! You get a match when a user you swipe right on also swipes right. If you haven’t received any matches yet, don’t give up! Just keep swiping and liking profiles and you will get a match. Have fun swiping!

You can’t chat with someone until you’ve matched with them.

Once that happens, they’ll automatically be added to your list of chats! You’ll know there’s a new match when a red dot appears on the message icon. We’ll also send you a message if you’ve activated push or email notifications. In your chat, you can send messages and pictures. You can also use the three vertical dots to view a user’s profile again. Have fun chatting!

  • One gray check mark means the message was sent
  • Two gray check marks mean the message was delivered to the recipient
  • Two blue check marks mean the message has been read by the recipient

You will only be able to see who liked your profile when you have a match. Otherwise, it’ll stay a mystery!

You can unmatch with someone by opening your chat with that user and tapping on the 3 vertical dots beside the reply field and tap “Unmatch”. This will remove them from your chat list, and you’ll be removed from theirs. This action can’t be undone.

At the moment, it’s not possible to undo a swipe or to see the profiles you’ve swiped right or left on. We’re looking into making this a possibility in the future. In the meantime, please enjoy your other great matches!

The red dot means you’ve got a new match and messaging has been unlocked with one or more matches. Congratulations! The red dot also appears when you get new messages from existing matches. If you have a new match but haven’t begun chatting yet, the red dot will stay until the first message has been sent as a friendly reminder.

To delete a chat, you have to unmatch with someone. You can do this by opening your chat with that user and tapping on the 3 vertical dots beside the reply field and tap “Unmatch”. This will remove them from your chat list, and you’ll be removed from theirs. This action can’t be undone.

#Dating is about enhancing your life, not filling it with meaningless moments. We hope every swipe you make will be the first step in making a meaningful connection! To encourage more thoughtful swiping, we have set limits on the number of daily swipes. Once you’ve reached the daily limit, you’ll have to wait until the next day for your available amount of swipes to reset. But don’t worry – we’ll send you a notification when you’re clear to start swiping again so you’ll never miss a match!

If one, or even a few, of your matches disappeared, it’s probably because that user deleted their profile or ended the match.

Deleted/blocked users
When a user deletes their profile, or becomes blocked due to inappropriate behaviour, their chat will stay in your match list for 30 days but they won’t receive any new messages. After 30 days, the chat disappears.

Inactive chats
Chats are automatically deleted after 18 months of inactivity. If you have not sent or received a message in a chat with one of your matches for 18 months, this chat will be removed.

All matches have disappeared
If all of your matches have disappeared, try closing the app and opening it again, or logging out and logging in again:

  1. Go to the Profile page
  2. Tap on the gear icon
  3. Tap on “Log out” at the bottom of the page
  4. Log back in

If your matches are still not visible after that, please reach out to our customer support team and we’ll get the issue fixed as quickly as possible.

After you unmatch with someone, it’s not possible to recover the match or the chat. The same goes for the person you are matched with – if they end the match or delete their account, they won’t receive your messages anymore and the chat will automatically disappear after 30 days. If you want them to be removed from your match list before the 30 days are over, you can unmatch with them.

Please reach out to our customer support team if you have any other questions. Your safety is our top priority!

Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of all our #Daters. Here are a few general security tips to help keep you safe, so you can have a good time meeting people on #Dating:

  • Keep the chat on the app: It’s a good idea to chat with your matches directly on the app until you can be sure they’re who they say they are
  • Don’t send your personal info: Don’t give out your personal info (like your email address, phone number, home address or where you work) until you can be sure they’re who they say they are
  • Don’t send money: #Dating is a place to make meaningful connections. It’s not a marketplace, so if anyone asks you to send them money, don’t! Report them instead.
  • Don’t send verification codes: We’re not sure why someone would ask you for a verification code, but there’s a pretty good chance a scam is involved. If someone is requesting a code, report them.
  • Meet in a public place and tell someone about it: When you’re meeting someone for the first time, make sure it’s in a public place. Tell a close friend your date’s name, where you’re going and when, and let them know when you’re safely back home.

For more tips, check out our 6 Tips for Safe Online Dating blog post. Above all, use your best judgment! If you don’t feel comfortable while you’re chatting with someone or on a date, you can always decide to end the conversation or date. That’s one way to date your way.

Playing Photo Duel

Play

Photo Duel is a fun new game where you can see profile pictures from all over the world! To play, go to the Play page to see two random profile pictures, answer fun questions such as “Who would you like to get coffee with?” and decide who wins! Your own profile photos will also be included in the game so that you can see how much other people love your photos too!

Have fun
Run out of daily swipes? Not many profiles in your area? Play Photo Duel for some extra fun!

Win duels
Get honest feedback about your profile photos and see how other people voted on your photos too by going to the Play page, then “My stats”. Want the best chance of winning your duel? Make sure your photos are in line with our guidelines.

Your profile pictures that have you in them will be shown to other users in the Photo Duel game so that you can see how much other people love your photos and how many duels you win!
